Robin van Persie has been appointed as Arsenal's new captain in the wake of Cesc Fabregas's move to Barcelona on Monday.
Van Persie took the armband for Saturday's 0-0 draw against Newcastle and has now been handed the honour on a formal basis.
Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen had also worn the armband during pre-season and will be Van Persie's vice-captain.
"Robin van Persie will be captain this season," Arsene Wenger told the official matchday programme for Tuesday's Champions League play-off first leg against Udinese.
"He is a leader through the way he plays, through his attitude and through his desire to win.
"He’s been at the club a long time and he’s a technical leader as well. Thomas Vermaelen will assist him, it’s the decision I have made and I’m confident the group will respond to it."
Fabregas was named Arsenal skipper in November 2008 after predecessor William Gallas was stripped of the honour for publicly criticising his team-mates.
