Johan Djourou has told talkSPORT that Arsenal teammate Robin Van Persie is as good as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The La Liga duo are widely regarded as the best two players in world football because of their remarkable scoring rate for Barcelona and Real Madrid.
But Djourou reckons the form of Gunners captain van Persie, who has now scored 31 goals in 29 games, means he has to be considered in the same bracket.
“I don’t think there is a hotter striker in Europe at the moment," the Arsenal defender said. "He is up there with Messi and Ronaldo, he is a great player and a great captain.
“The guy is so talented and he is showing it every week. It is amazing to see him doing all that but he deserves it because he has had problems before with injury. It is good to see him fit now.”
And Djourou insisted Arsenal must not be distracted by van Persie’s contract situation, claiming they must concentrate on maintaining his current form and pushing up the Premier League table and into contention for the top four.
“For me [van Persie’s contract situation] is not the main focus, the main focus is to have him fit and have him scoring goals for the team and to keep on winning games.
“That is the thing they have to discuss between him and the club but for me as a player it is just to keep it the way we are and keep fighting for each other.”
